Kanchenjunga
as the Queen of the Great Himalayas, stands on the
Nepal-India (Sikkim) border high above rhododendrons and
large forests with rivers pouring from it sides. On this
trip you will be able to study the culture and
life-style of the Rai & Limbu communities. Fly from
Kathmandu to Taplejung and trek to Base-Camp at Pangpema
and return to Taplejung by the same route; then fly back
to Kathmandu (21 days).
The lowland portion of this region is culturally
intriguing, but there are few good mountain views. The
two treks that I have described here will probably need
to be extended by a few days because of porter problems,
weather, or the need for a rest day. The Kanchenjunga
region is the home of the Limbus. Relatives of the Rais,
Limbus dominate the region east of the Arun River and
few live elsewhere. Limbu men wear a distinctive tall
topi, a Nepalese cap that is much more colourful than
that worn by other Nepalese.
Alternatively bus drive to Basantpur & trek to the
base camp; then back to Basantapur or Taplejung (25-28
days). Cross lobsang La or Mirgin La pass. Spending a
few more days gives an adventure for interested clients.
