The true summit of Lobuje East
proved an elusive goal but rocky outliners of the peak were first climbed by the
Swiss in 1952. Subsequent attempts fell short of the actual summit, soaring
above a profound notch at the far end of its long north-west/south-east ridge,
finally climbed in 1984
The east face, accessible from Lobuje, has attracted several strong teams. Jeff Lowe has added a difficult
route up an icy color, while Todd Bibler and Catherine Freer climbed the obvious
rocky East Ridge.
This trek has "everything". The fitter walker can get very close to Mt.
Everest on this trek, ascending Kala Patthar for the finest views of the whole
massif including Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse & Pumori. An ideal trek for those
wising to make the full Everest trek, yet who also have an interest in the local
traditions and culture.
Solu Khumbu is justifiably famous, not only for its proximity to the world's
highest mountain (8848 meters), but also for its Sherpa villages and
monasteries. The primary goal of an Everest trek is the Everest base camp at an
elevation of about 5340 metres. But you cannot see Everest from the base camp,
so most trekkers climb Kala Pattar, an unassuming 5545-metre bump on the
southern flank of Pumori (7145 metres) |
