Khumbu 3 Peaks
is a highly active expedition giving the chance to climbing three peaks in the Everest region, or simply trek between their base camps in remote areas of the Khumbu. It provides an opportunity to climb in the shadow of the world's highest mountains while taking in one of the most famous treks in the Himalaya.
In brief, we trek up the Everest Trail to a base camp in a secluded valley opposite Ama Dablam. Here we
acclimatize and practice mountaineering techniques, while climbing Pokalde & Kongma Tse before trekking up the Imja valley to climb Island Peak. From Island Peak, we retrace our steps back down the Imja valley to Dingboche where we drop back down into the Khumbu valley and return to Lukla.
Should you wish to shorten the 28 day itinerary then The Island Peak option can be missed out (days 18 - 21) allowing people to return to Kathmandu early & still enjoy a 24 day trip to Nepal.
Our three main climbing objectives are -
Pokalde - 5,806m
Pokalde is the 'warm-up' summit and involves mostly mixed terrain of rock and snow, with a straightforward snow climb as far as the summit rocks. An awkward section right at the top involves some scrambling.
Kongma Tse, 5820m
Formerly called Mehra Peak, Kongma Tse stands above the Khumbu Glacier. It is one of several summits that make up the long southwest ridge of Nuptse carved out between the Khumbu and Nuptse Glaciers. The views of the massive south face of Nuptse, Pumori to the north and the Lho La are simply spectacular from the summit
Island Peak (Imja Tse) - 6,189m
We climb the South Ridge, which involves grade 1 scrambling up a gully and easy rock to a glacier. We cross this, negotiating some crevasses to a final steep (40°) snow slope (100m) leading to the summit ridge. This can be corniced and leads in about three rope lengths to the summit. There are superb views of the south face of Lhotse, Baruntse and Ama
Dablam.
